Presentation 1

Avoiding the Pitfalls: How not to be a Red Teamer

Red Teaming is an essential component of modern cybersecurity, where teams simulate attacks on an organisation to identify vulnerabilities and strengthen defences. However, the Red Teaming approach can be misused or cause unintended harm if not conducted properly. In this talk, we will cover the common pitfalls that Red Teamers face, and how to avoid them.

We delve into topics such as ethical considerations, effective communication, and appropriate scope definition. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how to conduct Red Teaming exercises with care and responsibility, without compromising the integrity of the organisation they are working with.

Presentation 2

Making them see red: the potential negative psychological impact of red team activity on employee information security attitudes and behaviours

Red team activities are almost universally pitched as being beneficial to an organisation’s information security. However, there is an under-researched and seldom articulated question: Is it possible that the actions of a red team could make cyber security worse rather than better in the target organisation?

In this talk, Marco Cinnirella will draw upon real-world data from his large multi-national research. He will make a case that red teaming runs the risk of souring the potentially fragile trust between employee and employer, potentially eroding the so-called ‘psychological work contract’. Social psychological theory and research will be deployed to explore these risks and offer some insights into how to potentially navigate towards a better outcome for employees and the organisation.
