SheHacksSurrey: Women in Cyber Hackathon: Defending the Future

SheHacksSurreyWomen in Cyber Hackathon: Defending the Future is a one‑day immersive event designed to inspire, inform and empower women exploring careers in cybersecurity. The day combines career insight sessions with an interactive, hands‑on hackathon experience led by industry experts.
This event is in collaboration with Surrey Cyber Security Cluster (SCSC), CyberWomen Groups C.I.C. (CWG), Women in Cyber Unlimited, the University of Surrey, the Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL), and Biterra.
We are hosting interactive panel discussions about employment and skills opportunities with employers and training providers.
Biterra are hosting the hackathon in the afternoon with the topic “From the business front line to the connected home to the next wave of threats, how do we help Surrey defend itself?”
A three‑hour interactive team challenge focused on real‑world cyber defence scenarios. Teams will be asked to select one of three challenges.
- Many Surrey SMEs lack mature cyber defences and are vulnerable to everyday threats. Challenge: Develop an SME toolkit
- Connected devices (smart sensors, cameras, home hubs) are part of our lives but often insecure. More people are working remotely from home. Challenge: Design a prototype of an affordable secure IoT gateway or automated audit tool suitable for home and small business environments that highlights vulnerabilities and suggests fixes.
- Emerging technologies (AI-assisted attacks, quantum threats) are reshaping cybersecurity. Challenge: Explore how organisations in Surrey could defend against future-facing threats, by suggesting concepts for quantum-resistant algorithms, AI anomaly detectors, or ethical AI attack/defence tools.
Participants will: – Work collaboratively in teams – Analyse cyber risks and vulnerabilities – Develop practical solutions – Apply problem‑solving and communication skills
